Paragon Software Launches Six Most Popular Explanatory and Bilingual Merriam-Webster’s Dictionaries for Android Phones

Mobile World Congress, SPAIN – February, 2010 – Paragon Software Group, a leading software developer for mobile devices and desktop PCs, has launched the series of Merriam-Webster’s bilingual and explanatory dictionaries for Android phones. The product line includes Merriam-Webster's Collegiate® Dictionary, Eleventh Edition; Webster's Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged; Merriam-Webster’s Medical Dictionar; Merriam-Webster’s Pocket; The Merriam-Webster Dictionary; Merriam-Webster's English-French Dictionary and Merriam-Webster's English-Spanish Dictionary. The original dictionary titles from America’s foremost publisher were adapted for the mobile screen and supplemented with the new functionality providing fastest definition look-up, audio pronunciations, finger-friendly interface, ‘Search by Voice’ option (enabled by Google), ‘Word of the Day’ widget and search option directly on the Home screen. Paragon’s advanced Slovoed engine compresses even the weightiest content to minimal memory space. The traditional printed version of Merriam-Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged, for example, weighs in at 12.5 pounds (5,6 kg), has 2,662 pages and measures 4 inches (10,2 cm) thick, but occupies just ~750 Кb on your tiny mobile device.

America’s most comprehensive and authoritative dictionary, Merriam-Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, Unabridged provides the most extensive coverage of American English. Its database contains more than 257,244 entries and 700,000 definitions with more than 143,000 etymologies detailing word origins, 100,000 quotations and 1,100 synonymous paragraphs. Once installed, the dictionary can be accessed anywhere, anytime, without Internet connection or additional charges.

The largest and most popular college dictionary, Merriam-Webster's Collegiate® Dictionary, Eleventh Edition includes over 90,000 entries and 225,000 definitions containing more than 10,000 new words and meanings.

Merriam-Webster's French-English Dictionary provides the most extensive coverage of Canadian French with more than 80,000 entry words and phrases and 100,000 translations, as well as abundant examples of words used in context. Merriam-Webster's Spanish-English Dictionary covers Latin American and European Spanish, and contains more than 80,000 entries and 100,000 translations.

  • Word search option on the Home screen. The dictionary can be used as a search source in the phone’s Global search feature, search results will be shown in the ‘Quick Search Box’ widget.
  • Morphology module to look-up words in any grammatical form.
  • Search by voice. Speak the word instead of typing it in the dictionary.
  • English audio pronunciations recorded by native speakers.
  • Fuzzy Search helps in case of misspelling. Just enter a wrong variant and get a list of similar words.
  • Wildcard Search finds words even if the user does not know its exact spelling using “?” and “*” symbols to replace the missing.
  • Integration with Flash Cards application to quiz the comprehension.
  • Word of the day widget for the Home screen for daily word check. A random entry from the dictionary is changed daily.
  • Dictionary installation on memory cards.
  • Hyperlinks between related articles and directions.
  • Search History feature shows the last 20 words looked up.
  • No Internet connection required: simply download the dictionary to your device and use it with no further expense incurred.
